BK3 Period 4 - End of Year recap

Well, the last presentation with all the teachers kinda clarified how my 3rd year at AKV/St. Joost progressed.

-tried to paint, i was satisfied with my last painting, but compared to drawing it requires a whole different approach... it is just not working for me.

-made a first step in animation, the animation was about the only main artwork i showed at the presentation at the end of period 4, the other was a minor work and the Land Art project... the animation shows how i have been working the 3rd year: by not sticking to my initial idea/concept for a work, i have been distracted with many influences and put them all, alongside the initial idea, in 1 work. Making the image far too complex and not clear for the viewer to understand at all.

-i did acquire experience outside the academy by working as a volunteer at art initiative W139 in amsterdam and reading books (magical-realism and also a book containing dialogs between an artist/gamer/bioloog(biologist?) and an art philosopher who discuss all sorts of topics regarding art, media, games and philosophy)

In the next post, BK4 Period 1, i will elaborate how i take on year 4.

BK3 Period 4 - DB Skyline

Den Bosch skyline slideshow:
i took this sweep of photos right before they started to change that entire area, they already cut down most of the trees on the dijk/dyke and now all of it has been removed. They (Natuurmonumenten) are in charge of transforming that area into a place for outdoor recreation and also connecting the Gement to the other nature areas around Den Bosch.

I used this area for the Land Art project we were doing with Margriet. After seeing this very direct border between city and nature/farmland i came up with the idea of making people, who come through that area, aware of this contrast. By building a 2-3 meters high observation post with a focused view on the skyline of the city and on the other side the nature area. This post would be build a little bit inside the nature area and the materials would be grass, wooden planks and sand. The windows are there to narrow the viewing frame and to make people focus on what is seen inside that frame.

BK3 Period 2, trading my pencil for a brush

Well it was very exhausting finishing my paintings the last week before the final presentation of period 2. Staying late at college made me hate fridays when they close at 18:00 already instead of 20:00. Anyway, the presentation was good, they noticed i worked a lot on it in 2 weeks time.

But there are a few things have to work on:
- sometimes i have to let go my control whenever painting feels as if I'm in ecstasy, then i just have to go on and see what happens afterwards...go with the flow >.<

- research which canvas/paper size would be better, trying more kinds of size ratios, like instead of 80x100, i could use 40x100 or 100x100, its something i have to focus on now. I used to do that with drawings, but when buying the canvasses for those paintings i opted for the cheap ones which only had regular sizes.

well here is a slide show of the paintings, the first 2 are small 30x40 or something and the last 2 are 80x100.

The photo of the chalk drawing on the road was for the "Public Space" project in which we had to either make something on the spot, or put one of our old works in a public space that isnt directly Art related. My chalk drawing is a reaction on the small canal that is streaming nearby that road. I walk past it everytime i go to the art supply shop and I have never seen were that canal ends so i thought it might be fun to make an illusion as if it was underneath this particular road. The photo was taken from a metal stairs that was going up to a house of someone and it provided an opportunity to see the drawing from above int eh correct form. Viewing from the road it looks distorted.

Period 1, 3rd Year, Final Presentation

It feels as if these first 6 months of the 3rd year at AKV have passed by so fast. Especially the first period. Well these pictures represent the first period and the workshop week. There aren't as many as before >.< simply because i haven't made more artworks. More work was done in my head, more research and questions which i had to find an anwser to. I'll tell more about that in the Period 2 - 3rd year post.

Just a quick update, i will tell more later about the my last period of the second year on St. Joost.

This slideshow contains most of my drawings, they are both sketches made forests and my own artwork. Ill elaborate on these later too and i will also add the walldrawings i made.

Period Two, learning what not to want

A struggling period for me. Trying to find a way to draw like in the workshop, but then much bigger. The largest artwork being 2 by 1.5 meters (last 2 photos in slideshow) in which each line can be seen and each line was a torture to make: the wall on which i hang the paper was very rough and i had to press hard on the siberian chalk to make heavy think lines :(

But i don't like that big one. I prefer the finer lines of pencil that i used for other big drawings in this period. Plain charcoal also isn't very usefull when trying to draw precise, clear lines >.<

At the end of this period i felt a bit stuck, my imagination wasn't sufficient enough to make up new shapes that aren't generic and are abstract. I knew i would need an inspiration, wether it's something i see in nature or something from a photograph. But using an image felt a bit fake, inferior to what i make myself (Plato's mimesis :P ). What i learned in Period Three (the Minor period) was that images aren't inferior as long as i don't mimic them but use specific details of them and transform it into something completely different. It all sounds very vague but if you look at my blogpost in March 2008 about the Minor u might see what i mean.

Summary: Period 2 taught me more about technique than what my fasciniation is. I learned what i did NOT like :P

Nude Model drawings Period One and Two

After Period Two ended we had to present all our work and progress to our teachers. Mine consisted of two parts, one wall artworks and on an other one i wanted to show my modeldrawings. I made a selection of 12 drawings from period one and two that showed how i progressed at my techniques, from simple yet precise lines to only shades of grey without any contourlines.

A short yet very intens week. Also a week in which i discovered my own way to draw 3D objects. Previously i had been struggeling trying to draw stones in perspective. From this point on i am able to see things differently.

Minor "De Tekenkamer", slideshows and short movies

For family and friends, but also for myself an overview of what i have made during the Minor " De Tekenkamer ". There is a slideshow which contains almost all my work from that period. And there are 2 youtube videos.

I have been able to improve my drawing technique with ordinary pencils (ranging from 2H to 5B) and the use of charcoal.

But the most important thing that i have learned is that i now know more about what i really want to make. Its hard to say it in english though:

Specifieke vormen die voorkomen in de natuur interesseren me. Ik vind het zelf moeilijk om een (abstracte) vorm zelf uit me hoofd te halen, daarmee worstelde ik enorm in de 2de periode. In de minor heb ik mezelf afgeleerd om te denken dat het gebruik van een foto/afbeelding slechter is dan zelf iets te bedenken. Het maakt het mij makkelijker om nu ook op andere punten te letten, compositie en textuur. Kleur wil ik nog niet gebruiken dat is nog een heel ander gebied wat ik zou moeten onderzoeken, ik heb nu de neiging om gauw te stylistisch kleuren bij elkaar te doen.

Anyway, enjoy the pictures :)

PS: my wallpainting is something that has turned to be pretty good considering i never used "eitempera" before and the last time i seriously painted was in october.
It is also something that could lead me on a different path.

Dit is ff een vlugge update. Een paar van mijn eerste werken indit nieuwe schooljaar.
Thema is verzameling en ik heb gekozen voor stenen. Alle soorten en maten, edel of gewoon. Er zitten ook een paar modeltekeningen bij van afgelopen woensdag 12-9. En die kliko rupsband/rad heft een groepje gemaakt waarbij ik een beetje heb geholpen met tillen. Ik zal deze post in de loop van de tijd uitgebreider maken. Ik heb voor de schilderingen aquarel gebruikt waar ik redelijk goed mee overweg kan.

2D-beeldonderzoek Period 3

Unlike with Beeld & Concept, i didn't have any problems with 2D in period 3. The only thing i regret is taking more time. I'm a bit unsatisfied with the end result, because i wanted to make at least a few large paintings, equal in size with the volcano one. Anyway, the teacher Judith gave me my second 8, because she liked the initial research and the way my theme evolved from cloudy mountains to threathening smoke near mountains. She also said i have a pictorial quality and a good work ethic.

Beeld & Concept, Period 3 photos

It has been a while since i have put something on my blog. Anyway here are the photos of all my sea-themed squares. Actually, the theme is comprised of two subjects: the unstoppable sea and the control over the sea through dikes (dijken in dutch). At first i felt a bit limited because we were only allowed to use square sized art. But once i started making some 3d's i felt inspired again to make lots and lots of them.

The teacher wasn't fond of my final selection of a minimum of 12 squares, but she did like the way i worked this period. I still got an 8, which i'm very pleased with.

Presentation! Selfconfidence! Selfcriticism! These are the obstacles i have to overcome. Of all my sketches and sculptures some are really good, but the problem for me is realizing which one of them are good. It's not that i hate them all, on the contrary, i like almost all the things i make.

The way how i see it: i may like the sculpture, but is it good enough to be even allowed to be called art? How do i know when something is good when there is not a teacher around to tell me? Is it when i'm satisfied with the end-result? Not only does my lack of selfconfidence make me ask those questions, but it also ruins my presentation.

I know its important where you place a sculpture/painting, but at all the other classes everyone just put all their stuff at one spot so the teacher doesn't have to walk all around the school and more importantly: they can see all the work you have made in a period in an overview. None of them except Herman (3d beeldonderzoek) told me that my presentation was very bad and the only time Herman told me that was at the periodic judgement. Not during classes or meetings, he almost always says that my artwork is good and very interesting. What he said regarding the presentation is that alone my works are great. But together with all the others they fall flat and aren't good anymore.

I have to be confident enough to just place all my work at their own best places and not be bothered about taking in someone else his space. THAT is what i´m going to do at the assesment. Present my work in their appropriate places and tell the teachers that im going to build on my confidence!!!

Anyway, i have a 7 for 3D, which could have been an 8 if it weren´t for my presentation.

These are my last Period 2 artworks for BC. The assignment was to experiment with my other. The theme i choose was seduction. The teacher said that i have done well at experimenting on trying to find the meaning of seduction. She also said that i have an open attitude towards the assignment. I was awarded a firm 7 for BC period 2, which im really happy about, because in period 1 i barely got a six.

Serieel Beeld Period 2 shortmovie

This is my short movie about stains made by coffee pads on paper. The inspiration came from when we had to research a trashbag. I found a pad which I put on paper, after i removed to clean up, a stain was made. I also had some other ideas for a movie, but this is my favourite and best idea. The teacher agreed and gave me an 8 for Serieel Beeld!!! Anyway, enjoy the shortmovie!!!

2D-beeldonderzoek, a series of 10 images about shadow

I'm finally finished with my series about shadow. The assignment was to research portraying images about shadow while using a literary text that has the theme of shadow in it. Mine was about a thief lurking in the shadows. So all my views where outside the light, watching what is happening in the light. To find out what i can tell without showing the subjects. The first photo is my composition of how im going to show them to my teacher at the judgement day. As you can see the biggest one is in the middle, because it means the most for me.

I made it look like as if I am looking from a distance at what all those people are going to. Visually it is a HUGE doorway/opening from which a warm, almost fire-like light shines. The exterior of the building or whatever the door leads to is covered in dark-mist that tries to cover the opening.
It means so much for me because it portrays how i feel towards society: I'm in a distant position. Almost looking with envy at the crowd in the doorway, but also with a feeling of relief not having to follow them into the light.(comment on image above)

The Other, experimenting with portraiing my personal other

This is the second phase in The Other assignment: experimenting on how to portray my personal other in an interesting way without using the obvious illustrations. Mine is the videogame: it's like a drug for me and i'm trying to visualize the temptation/seduction of it. The image posted here is my first try. It represents a beautifull floating grass island you can find in many rpg's, but it's very superficial. Hence the hollow framework beneath it.

For me a RPG-world is a way to forget realworld issues, but also makes me think about them in a different way. I used to have a deep urge/wish to be in a rpg-videogame world, to be able to use magic or start an adventure with a group of people. Most people will say i'm crazy.

When i started this propedeuse at the AKV i found it very difficult to combine the two worlds of art and videogame. But the first period of Beeld en Concept made me realise that i can use the videogame as a motive to make art. I, however, thought that it wasn't sufficient enough. but the teacher told me otherwise. Thankfully.

The last assignement for 2D was to make a visually interesting book that is about the topic the teachers gave to us personally. The 2nd book was better, but there is room for improvement. I also have to be more critical on my own work, to judge what is good or not.

3D beeldonderzoek Semester 1 last batch

These are the last few abstract objects i made for 3D-beeldonderzoek. The green with black paper-maché piece took the longest time to make and the hanging shapes was really frustrating to put together. NO, it's NOT a MOBILE. I made it like that to show that each is a seperate, different shape, but together are a whole. But i do like it though. The last one came up from nowhere, i had a shape in my head and tried to form. It is a bit macabre, because now it looks like a body part wrapped in protective foil as if it was from a donor.

Serieel Beeld semester 1 film

I succeeded at uploading my vid on youtube and displaying it on my blog!!!

Now, about the film. After i made the flying bird stopmotion, the teacher Hans Laban asked me what i wanted to portray in it. I wanted to imitate the motion of the flapping bird, but then Hans said that it would be much more of an interesting movie if i make a story out of it. He was so right. (Looking at the stopmotion)=> Wow, that's a nice movement, but interesting? NOT!!!

So i began making a storyboard that i do want to make a film of (i have made some earlier, but they weren't good). Once i knew all the shots i had to make i started making the backgrounds and moving objects. While i was making the pidgeonhead i realised that i can re-use some bodyparts in more scenes. I also made some short vids instead of animations to speed up the production which turned out to be very quick to make. Lastly, editing all the scenes into a proper short film. At first i had some problems with WMM2 freezing every 10 min, but i solved that by reinstalling the exe file from the SP2 map.

Anyway, just watch the film and post a comment if you think the editing can be improved.

Beoordelingweek results of period 1

Long time no see!!!

Well, i have been busy the last few weeks of semester 1 to finish the assignments. Some took a lot of time, but i managed to make what i wanted for the beoordelingweek. So i don't have any regrets about my assesments. I will put photos and maybe even a few vids (after i make a youtube account) of all the works i haven't displayed here yet. However, during this second period i will post those that i have learned from, the ones that matter.

It would be easier to make a flash slideshow like the ones that Leon Romer and Markus Lindtfeld have on their blog, but i haven't got a clue yet on how to make one.

Anyway here are the grades i got for each course:

I will explain each of the grades with their corresponding posts i will put up next week.
What they thought of me globally was that i am a hard and disciplined worker, there was a good amount of progress in my work, i listen and process well what the teachers tell me and my amount of experimentation was good. However, i have to communicate better with the other students, read a lot more books of artists, show myself more to the class (stop beiing shy, which is hard) and be more critical on my own work on what is good and what isn't. So it's mostly psychological.

Serieel Beeld, Movement=Time

These photos are in chronological order from bottom to top. I started with some small experimentations with my photos i made followed by a experiment on birds in the city of Den Bosch. The assignment was to get from all our photos and remarks of the 12 min trip to 30 and later to 6 photos. From those six we now have to form a little story that can be made with any kind of medium. For the birds i choose a stopmotion. I wanted to see if i could mimic the movements of birds so it can be used for my story. The animation isn't that long, i have only made a basic flapping movement from when they are flying. It's not supposed to be that fast, i haven't found a way yet to solve that problem. When i view it on my own pc it's working normally though.

This is a personal silly little project about a plant in my garden. It's a papaya-type flowerbush, but actually looks nothing like the real papaya tree. It's really complex and beautifull. I used a few filters in PS CS2 to get a neon glow, a cut out of the neon version, a negatif of the cut-out version and then i used a blendtool to make a supernova of the first cut-out. The flower really resembles a real supernova. Nothing serious though.

2D Beeldonderzoek OVERLOAD!!!!

Quite a list huh?! I have put almost all my 2D beeldonderzoek work in this post. This time i managed to put them in the exact order of creation, but you have to start from the bottom to the top. We started with drawing the model's pose to practice making the right base lines. After that came drawing and painting the model, but the assignment was to only draw the shapes of the body. The ones that are painted, are the parts of her body that is dark or are shadows. The next lesson we had to pick one of our paintings and experiment with the shapes, textures and composition of it. Well... i forgot we had to use our own work for that so i quickly made a new painting of a new picture really fast (the baby-angel). The four last ones are also experiments, but then i didn't use the base painting. The assignment was to experiment on specific subjects/descriptions which were derived from our previous experiments. I had: positif-negatif, shape-countershape and, an object/thing that is invisible, but still seems to be present in the image. I control how much the audience can see it. The last four are about those subjects. I like them all, but my absolute favorite is the second from above red painting, the one with a foot like object. It's as if there is like a huge thing missing, which makes it a very interesting painting.

3D Beeldonderzoek newest abstract objects

The assignment was to "ascend" from 2D to 3D abstract collages. Well, as you might have seen my previous collages, i was already making some 3D works. These are more experimental and are quite a bit different from the others. I have taken multiple shots from different angles so you can better see the objects. All of them, except 7, 8 and 9, are objects you are supposed to hold in your hands. Especially the Viewing Tube and the Container. My favorites are 5-6 and 8 (also referred to as Elf ears by some students :)) ). Next time i will post some photos of other lessons. They are totally different from 3D beeldonderzoek though.

The Search for a Balance between Shapes and Complexity

These are also for 3d beeldonderzoek. The assignment was to still make abstract collages, but then experiment more. Each of the students were given a personal subject after Herman Lamers discussed with each of us about our fifteen collages we made earlier. I had to research shapes and the complexity they can get. I started out very chaotic and complex, but now i try to find a balance between shapes and complexity which is also the reason i didn't use any colors (except for the last one, number 3). The ones with a yellowish background are the last collages i made in this series. My favorites are 5 and 11. I will post some more photos next monday of new collages aswell as other lesson's artworks.

I made these for 3d beeldonderzoek. The assignment was to make fifteen abstract collages for the next lesson. These six are my favourites. Most of the other students think that they are very complex and chaotic. The third one was my first, it represents some kind of swirling movement.

These are a couple of my photos i made for SB. I first shot the lower one and a week later at almost the exact same place the upper photo. You can see that the fall is coming in our country. I'm glad because i hate a hot summer. It's was so hot for such a long time.

It appears that the problems was that i didn't clear my browser cache prior to viewing my blog. But isn't that something that shouldn't have to be done? Do we all have to clear the cache everytime we post or make a change in the template or is it because of Firefox?

Anyway, i haven't introduced myself properly, have i?
I'm Dennis Amatdjais, 21 years old. I still live with my parents and two little brothers of 13 and 16 years old. I'm currently studying at the AVK/St. Joost school of Arts, which is also the reason i made this blog. Most people who visit this blog already know that though. You can see my interests and other data at my profile. As you may have read in my earlier posts, my html skills are like non-existent, so if you have any links to tutorials or some tips just put them in a comment. For now enjoy the terrific view of the endless tunnel to my reality.

UPDATE: I have looked up some tutorials and downloaded CoffeeCup Free html Editor. Weird name, but it's very usefull. So far i like the design which i made in PS CS2 and i don't think i'm going to change it for a while. Html is still a bit complicated though.

I made this photo in Den Bosch for the Serieeel Beeld lessons. I really like the birds' movements in this shot. It shows how fast they flap their wings and in what directions.
